Vertical Sky

Lillianna Marie Baczeski

Vertical Sky is the culmination of a yearlong protest during the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. Beginning on January 1, 2017 I photographed the sky every day until December 31, 2017. Like many women who marched all over the country in early 2017, I wanted to take action against the president’s weaponized words that targeted women and minorities. I wanted to engage in a sustained, reflective and calm action; an action that reminded me every single day that the sky reaches down to touch me, and that I have worth; an action that reminded me that just because someone (even a very important someone, like a president) sees something as horizontal, that doesn’t mean it cannot be vertical.
